Dextran is a water-soluble polysaccharide extracted from the metabolites of bacteria (e.g. Candida albicans). It is composed of D-glucose linked by 1 → 6 bonds and linked by glycosylation at branch points 1 → 2, 1 → 3 and 1 → 4. According to different sources, various branched glucans with different average relative molecular weights can be obtained. At first, glucan was used as a substitute for plasma.
